Jack is now finally in LA, so we are taking our time to explore the little gems throughout LA and what’s around us. We are big foodies so when a few friends of ours told us to explore the Grand Central Market in downtown Los Angeles, we jumped on it the first opportunity we could!
Plus, another Melbournian coffee snob (not Jack) rated the coffee shop there pretty highly, so we just had to see it for ourselves and put it to the test against Jacks coffee snobbery.
We had several places in mind that we wanted to try while we were there (mainly, because I keep a running list of must try restaurants in LA because, honestly, nothing makes us happier than food. And yes, coffee for Jack).
As we arrived to Grand Central Market, the sun was shining, people looked delighted with the food, and the air smelled like freshly cooked bacon. Mmm…I mean seriously, how much more awesome can life get? Well, it totally got better.
As you walk into the markets, people are lined up at all stalls to eat all types of food—sandwiches, burritos, juices, BBQ, coffee, and so much more. But our stomachs caught a whiff of something glorious and we followed our noses and growling appetites. It led us to indulge at G&B Coffee and Eggslut.
Coffee, of course, came before lunch. So we waited a few minutes in line for a much desired highly-rated-by-a-fellow-Melbournian coffee at G&B. They really have their things together—it was a systematic process of grinding the exact amount of beans per serving, getting the perfect amount of coffee out of the beans, and foaming up the milk to the T. Jack got a latte and I got the macadamia, almond milk latte since they don’t have mochas and I suck at caffeine. The pricing was also pretty reasonable, around $4-5 for most coffees.
Jack enjoyed his coffee, but not as much as he thought he was going to. He thought the coffee was going to taste a touch stronger, but nonetheless, still names it one of his top favorites in LA. (Phew! Such a spoiled Aussie). If you are also addicted to coffee, check out our list of the top coffees around the world.
I, on the other hand, thought it was a bit strong and bitter with a weird after taste. But again, I suck at drinking coffees and I would trust the Aussie for his taste on a good cup of joe.
Now, for lunch we headed to Eggslut. Yes, a place called Eggslut. With a name like that and a line wrapped around the stall, our stomachs we interested. Although the line was overwhelmingly long, the wait was not nearly as long as we thought it would be.
Plus, the enticing smell of bacon and eggs kept saying “just wait a little longer and it will all be worth it.” And it was. Oh boy, was it worth it.
We ordered the bacon, egg and cheese and a chipotle ketchup sandwich and the Eggslut Burger (wagyu beef, caramelized eggs, pickles, cheese, a runny egg, and bacon). We also got avocado on both, as you do when you are at Eggslut.
These sandwiches, no joke, were unreal. Dripping with yolk and burger juices, our mouths were salivating and our taste buds excited. It was a perfect brunch meal and we were so happily satisfied with everything we got. Eggslut, you complete slut, we will come back for seconds.
We ended our Grand Central Market experience with a shop for fresh fruit and veggies. There was a tiny Farmers Market within Grand Central to buy fresh produce at a steal. We got 2 punnets of blackberries, 3 cucumbers, and a big punnet of strawberries all for $3. We were happy and set for future healthy breakfasts!
The Grand Central Market in LA was awesome. I can’t believe as an LA local I have never been! We satisfied our hunger and found a new favorite coffee place. That is a win for us! We will definitely need to come back to try out other food stalls….or maybe go back to Eggslut once more! Til’ we meet again, Eggslut…uh, we mean Grand Central Market, Farewell!
I have been there twice. The first time was before all the new trendy places came in. I can’t believe how much it changed in just one year! I hope the little produce vendors can afford to stay there.
The vendors seem to be doing quite well, there was a huge line while we were there!! And YES, its super trendy, there are kombucha stalls, pressed juicery, so many things!
